Shop opening time is basically from 9am to 1pm and from 4pm to 7.30pm.
Area markets are open only from 7am to 2pm
Two drugstores open 24h are located at the Termini and Tiburtina stations.
Clothes
Clothes shops close weekly on Monday mornings.
Some of the most famous and charming boutiques of the world are in the area between Via del Corso and Via del Babuino, main ateliers have their windows in this district: Armani, Valentino, Missoni, Dolce & Gabbana, Krizia, Fendi, Versace, Prada, Gucci. |
Impressive jewels by Bulgari, Cartier, Chantecler, Damiani are in Via Condotti as well as La Perla and Battistoni boutiques. Battistoni is definitely one of the best known shops in Rome for classic clothes, located in a charming courtyard of a beautiful old palace. Even if the centre of the city is nowadays full of jeans and fashionable clothing shops, there are still a lot of interesting shops in Via Frattina, in Via della Croce, in Via Vittoria.
Going towards Piazza Venezia, Cenci is a famous name for women and men classic and casual clothes, and Via Minghetti 7 is the address of Fratelli Viganó shop, famous for its variety of hats and men clothes.
In the area between Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori there are some nice handcraft shops of wicker chairs, baskets and a lot of handmade items.
During the whole Christmas’ period you will find in Piazza Navona a nice market of toys, sweets and cakes, as well as Christmas’ tree items.
In the same area, on the side of Piazza Argentina between the Jewish area and Via delle Botteghe Oscure there are many fabric shops.
In the Vaticano area (via Cola di Rienzo, via Ottaviano, via Candia) there are a lot of shops, clothing, shoes, home ware, food and wine specialities, at expensive and even very cheap prices.
Antiques shops
For those who love antique furniture and art Via Giulia is very interesting, but there are a lot of important antique dealers and art galleries in via del Babuino and via Margutta, the area where many painters and artists set up their studios.
It is definitely worth a visit to the Alinari gallery in via Alibert 16/a: it is a famous family of photographers still keeping a lot of pictures of Rome at the beginning of the 20th century.
A new entry in Via del Babuino is a Japanese shop called Tad, a very big store displaying clothes, furniture, fragrances, books and flowers. There are also a nice restaurant and a hairdresser.
Markets
Should you love going around discovering small markets, enjoy your time looking for a bargain in nice places usually haunted by city inhabitants.
A very cheap emporium is called Mas, located in via dello Statuto, between Termini Station and Piazza Vittorio. Go to the Testaccio market, in Piazza dell’Emporio, where you can find many chances to bargain. Do not forget a visit to the Piazza Portese market, on Sundays, where you will find any kind of curiosities, new and used clothes, food, flowers, Russian caviar, cameras, antiques, furs..).
There are many other Sunday markets, mostly dedicated to antiques, such as Borghetto Flaminio, near Piazzale Flaminio and Piazza Verdi, in the Parioli district.
Bookshops
One of the most important Italian bookshops, Feltrinelli, is in Piazza Argentina: more than 70000 books are available and in addition to that a large section dedicated to CDs and multimedia.
For those who like going around at night the Arion bookshop, in via Veneto 42, is open till 6am: in addition to books you can also have a coffee and read a newspaper.
The MelBookstore, in Piazza SS. Apostoli, can offer a huge range of children books, but there is one more MelBookstore for adults in via Nazionale. Rinascita, in via Botteghe Oscure 1, is good for books and CDs.
In the heart of Trastevere there is a trendy bookshop called Bibli: not only books but it is also a cultural meeting point, internet point and café, where you can have a tasty lunch or a cup of tea.
Bibli is open from 11am to 12pm on Tuesday's and Saturday's, from 5.30pm to 12pm on Monday's. |
