ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUMS

Musei Capitolini

The most antique public collection of the world, including sculptures of great value, like the Galata Morente and the Venere Capitolina. In the Paintings Gallery there are works of art from the 14th to the 17th century, by Tiziano, Bellini, Caravaggio.

Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia
A splendid villa is the location of this museum, with a relevant collection of pre-Roman art from the Etruscan and Faliscan civilizations.

Opening time: 8.30am–7.30pm, closed on Mondays, on the 25th of December and the 1st of January.

Museo Nazionale Romano
One of the most important archeological collection of the world, distributed in five different sites.

Combined tickets avalaible:

Museo Nazionale Romano from € 7,00-reduced € 3,00, 3 days validity for all Museum sites;

Archeologia card from € 20,00, 7 days validity, including also the entrance to the Colosseo, Palatino, Terme di Caracalla, Tomba di Cecilia Metella, Villa dei Quintili.

A very important private collection of paintings and sculptures, by Italian and foreign artists: Velazquez, Tiziano, Bernini, Caravaggio, Andrea del Sarto.

Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAM)     
Undoubtedly the greatest collection of paintings, sculptures and works of art mostly by Italian artists, dating from 19th century up to the present.

Macro - Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Roma       
Italian Art since 1946 up to the present days.

Museo Ebraico di Roma   
Many interesting objects connected to the Jewish religion. Historical documents about the relationship between the Italian Jewish Community and Italy, and about Nazi persecution.

Opening time: Sunday to Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-2pm (from June to September 10am-8pm). Closed on Sundays and Jewish feasts.

Museo Nazionale dell'Alto Medioevo  
This recently founded museum (1967) displays a collection of archaeological material from excavations, dating from the late antiquity and the middle age (4th-13th centuries).

Museo del Risorgimento
This museum is part of the monument, so-called the Vittoriano, to the king Vittorio Emanuele II. There are displayed paintings, sculptures, drawings about the period between the Italian Risorgimento and the First World War.

Museo e Galleria Borghese
In this splendid and recently restored villa, dating from 1613-14, the Cardinal Scipione Borghese collected many works of art, paintings and sculptures  putting together a unique collection of masterpieces by Bernini , Canova, Caravaggio, Tiziano, Rubens.

Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo
It was built by the Emperor Adriano to be his and his family mausoleum, Castel Sant’Angelo became a fortress and after that a prison. Today it is the seat of an important artistic and military museum.

Museo Storico della Liberazione di Roma 
This museum was set up in the former headquarter of the SS Kommandantur, where some key-members of the Roman Resistance were imprisoned, interrogated and tortured and most of them lost there their lives.

Musei Vaticani    
One of the most important Museums of the world, it is presented in various sections containing masterpieces by  famous artists collected during the centuries by the Popes. At the end of the tour there is the amazing Cappella Sistina, recently restored with the original amazing colours so that now Michelangelo’s fresco is finally uncovered.

MONUMENTS
Colosseo (Anfiteatro Flavio)   
       
This amphitheatre, which is undoubtedly the most important symbol of ancient Rome, was the place for fights between gladiators and ferocious animals. It was divided into four levels of seats and it contained more than fifty thousand people.

Foro Romano  
The Forum was the political, economic and religious centre of ancient Rome, site of temples, courts, public and private business  buildings.

Terme di Caracalla

Ara Pacis Augustae
A monumental altar erected  in 13-19 b. C. to celebrate the peace established by Augustus in the whole Roman Empire.

Ostia Antica          
These impressive remains of the Roman settlements used to be the military fort to protect the river entrance as well as the shipyard and the meeting point for  the Roman fleet and food storage centre.

Vittoriano
This monument was unveiled in 1911 to be dedicated to the King Vittorio Emanuele II, today it contains the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and it is completely open to the public, its terraces as well as its internal rooms (Sacrario delle Bandiere, Museo del Risorgimento).
