The fountains

Rome fountains

There is no city of the world that has more water and fountains than Rome. Since very ancient times many water systems supplied a huge amount of water for the population, fountains and magnificent baths. The inroads of barberians put an end to this wellness and only at the end of the 16th century the Popes decided the construction of monumental fountains once again to celebrate the magnificence of the Christian Church. Still today the water coming out from small fountains is drinkable and very good.

If we go to Piazza della Repubblica, at present otherwise known as Piazza Esedra, we can find the Fontana delle Naiadi, scenic masterpiece realized in 1901 by the sculptor Mario Rutelli. From there starts Via Nazionale, one of the main streets of the city centre and a very lively and commercial area. Very nearby, in Piazza San Bernardo there is the Fontana del Mosé, representing the terminal part of the Felice water system.
In 1642 Bernini realized his great masterpiece in Piazza Barberini: the spectacular Fontana del Tritone, representing a Triton blowing into a huge shell proclaiming the glory of the Barberini family to the world. In the corner between Piazza Barberini and Via Veneto we find a small but very nice fountain, the Fontana delle Api.
From Via del Tritone through the nice Via della Stamperia we can get to the most beautiful fountain of Rome, the famous Fontana di Trevi celebrated in the Fellini’s film, La dolce vita.
Its name comes from the Latin word Trivium, which means meeting point of three streets.
This fountain is the terminal part of the Vergine water-system the one that still today supplies  the water to the fountains of the city centre. It was realized by Stefano Salvi, between 1732 and  1762, as a theatre-shape in a very large and unusual size.
According to the legend if you wish to come again to Rome you should throw a coin into the water   with your back to the fountain.
At the foot of the very famous Spanish Steps, in Piazza di Spagna we find the splendid Fontana della Barcaccia. It was realized in 1629 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini probably with the contribution of his son Pietro by appointment of the pope Urbano VII. According to the tradition, the creation of a fountain shaped like a submerged boat intended to remind a sinked boat that, because of a great flood in 1598, was found in the centre of the square.
From Piazza di Spagna to Via del Babuino, a very beautiful street plenty of antique dealers shops, we find the fountain with the same name because of the not very nice monkey represented.
In the small but fascinating Via Margutta, where many Italian and foreign artists set up their studios, obviously is located the Fontanella degli Artisti, realized by Pietro Lombardi in 1927.
